Prevention tips

  • Build a fire break by removing flammable materials within a 10-m radius.
  • Leave 5 m between your trees and prune off branches from the ground up to 2 m.
  • Choose non-flammable materials such as sheet metal or bricks for your walls.
  • Equip your chimney or wood stove with a fire screen to protect against sparks.
  • Choose a roof made of metal or fibreglass.
  • Choose a cleared area, away from the wind and close to water.
  • Keep a constant eye on your fire, never leave it unattended.
  • When putting the fire out, make sure to douse with lots of water and
cover the ashes with sand before leaving the area.
  • Keep tools such as shovels, water buckets or rakes close by the fire.
  • Consult the fire danger for your destination, a situation may change quickly.
  • If you want to clear your property, try composting.
  • Wait until the late in the day and make sure there is no wind.
  • Remain alert, fine fuels such as dead leaves and twigs blow away easily over great distances.
  • Before burning something, ask your municipality. Several municipalities now require a permit.
  • If you want to smoke in a forested area, choose a cleared area and extinguish
your cigarette butt on a rock or by burying it in the ground.
  • To report a forest fire, call toll free 1 800-463-3389 (FEUX).
