Technical glossary

This technical glossary defines several words and expressions used in forest fire protection and management. The definitions are from the Glossary of Forest Fire Management Terms published in 2003 by the Canadian Interagency Forest Fire Centre in Winnipeg.

Grass fire – A fire in which the predominant fuel is grass or grasslike.

Ground attack – A fire suppression operation involving the use of ground forces.

Ground Probe – A specialized nozzle used to penetrate deep-seated combustible fuels to extinguish ground fires.

Gutter Trench – A ditch dug to the mineral soil on a slope below a fire to trap rolling firebrands, such as cones and logs.
